Judging by the startled looks on the faces of folks who encountered the Atlanta native inside a North Carolina Target on Thursday night, it’s doubtful any sort of announcement like that was made. Instead, the Carolina Panthers superstar pulled the in-store version of a quarterback sneak, offering one-on-one Father’s Day shopping tips to some clearly delighted customers.
“You want to knock dad out with excitement on the morning of Father’s Day,” he told a giggling, pigtailed girl named Madison, as he feigned throwing a gift as a deep pass in the South Charlotte store.
“Going straight from beast to beast mode,” he advised a towheaded little boy about a set of headphones. The Mutt and Jeff-sized duo then bumped fists to Newton’s cry of “Poundcake!”
Back in December, Newton, who went to Westlake High School here before winning a Heisman Trophy at Auburn University, announced that he and his longtime girlfriend had recently become parents to a son. In Target on Thursday night, Newton suggested he’d gained new insight into what dads really want.
“Me being a new father and all, I can help you out from the new father’s perspective,” he told one mother and her clearly awestruck young son.
“What would you like to get for Father’s Day?” Mom asked Cam.
“Oh, just some gummy bears and stuff,” he responded.
