American Red Cross yanks posters some found racist

The American Red Cross moved swiftly amid a social media storm over a pool safety poster some found racist.

Jesus depictions are racist, Black Lives Matter activist says

The poster of pool safety rules, above, shared by John Sawyer of Washington, shows “cool” and “not cool” summertime behavior. “Not cool” conduct includes pushing people into the pool or diving in too close to other swimmers. Most of the “not cool” violators appear to be children of color (they’re rendered as cartoons).

Others quickly weighed in:

The agency moved quickly, thanked Sawyer for the alert and said it will come up with new materials.

Not racist to me but I can see how the poster could be insulting to some. Just redraw the poster and let this one fade from everyone's memory

There are 5 not cool arrows. 4 are OVERWHELMINGLY pointed at the Black children. All the rest are ok. Who made the decision to put virtually all the negative signs on the Black kids?? It tosses onto the pile of subliminal and overt negativity in our daily potrayal to the masses. #notcool

Two things; No one will get fired or reprimanded for this. Maybe the AJC should post a story on how the Red Cross took money that was donated during 9/11 and they decided to use the money for themselves, to upgrade their equipment all over the country instead of for the victims.

This is almost as stupid as the worry over the Washington Redskins name. People grow up and worry about something just a touch more significant.

Expanding your horizons is something you should consider.

Red Cross knew exact what they were doing by providing this poster. Your insensitivity shows your heart

Oh really? Do you know that the first people called in for natural and man made disaters are the red cross? Did you know that a hell of a lot them are in Africa and poor black neighborhoods in the United States. You are barking up the wrong tree little girl by calling the Red Cross racist. How can you be so ignorant!!!!

Ann Young
Ann Young

Sheryl, you are mistaken I'm not a little girl. Everybody got an opinion, mines is no better than yours, and YOURS is no better than mine. A mature individual would attack the opinion and not the person. So suck it up

So the ratio of non white and white kids portrayed as "not cool" is racist? People really need to learn and understand what the term racist means. Nowadays it seems that when something is deemed "racist" it's actually just insensitive or in bad taste per say. The term "racist" has been inaccurately misused so much that it's lost it's effectiveness and meaning. (Waiting for the " you're white and know nothing about racism" or my favorite ".....says the white man talking about racism")

April Box-Moore
April Box-Moore

Racism is subjective, and there are many, many white people who have a clear grasp on just what racism is. Understanding racism had much more to do with your level of empathy and compassion for other people than it does with your skin color. One thing that no human is able to do is tell another person what they should or should not view as racist.

If you think that is racist, you're on crack.

Yes OMG if you where all black and you accidently walk into a gas station in a black neighborhood. You just became a racist!

Robert Landrum

Because I'm white, I should shut up? You're here using racism to complain about faux racism on a piece of paper where the kids ratio isn't equally depicted. Jesus, do you see how absurd that is? I can't imagine what the world looks like through hate filled eyes like that.

You know there is a diaper commercial that shows 2 poor babies dragging around sagging nasty, droopy, diapers and then it shows 2 babies happy and dancing in fitted, comfy, nice diapers. The yucky diapers are both worn by white children and the nice diapers are worn by non nonwhite babies. Now it seems to me by the above article standards this would stand as an example of racism BUT somehow I missed the uproar in the media? You can invent "racism" if you try hard, ridiculous.

April Box-Moore
April Box-Moore

No need to try to "invent" raciam because it is very real. If you are not offended by this ad campaign, you are well within your rights. Many people were, and they were well within their rights to bring it to the attention of the Red Cross. Kudos to the Red Cross for taking their concerns seriously. PS, if the diaper commercial bothers.you, you should voice your concerns to the company.

April Box-Moore go find a hobby, idiot,..there were 3 black children and TWO white children who were labeled as "uncool" get a freaking life

Robert Landrum
Robert Landrum

April Box-Moore being offended by something doesn't mean it's "racist". Insensitive? Sure. Bad taste? Sure. But misusing terms like "racist" does nothing but devalue the word for when it's actually needed.

April Box-Moore
April Box-Moore

Bless your heart Ryan, you feel the need to call names. Sorry that you're vocabulary is do limited that you aren't properly able to express yourself.

April Box-Moore
April Box-Moore

Robert, racism is subjective. What is racist to you may not be to me and what is racist to me may not be to you. No right or wrong, but that is not something that you get to decide for the other person.

Kathlene Gerety Miller
Kathlene Gerety Miller

April the problem is that if I were to look for a media storm over the "racism" displayed in the commercial I would be then labeled a "racist" as it is not socially acceptable to be offended if you are white. Robert makes and extremely valid point, fussing about every silly thing and looking to overuse and abuse the word simply devalues it.

Robert Landrum
Robert Landrum

I see what you're saying April Box-Moore but the issue I see is if we go by that thought, racism is nothing more that subjection. What's racist to one might not be to another. Honestly that seems like a dangerous train of thought. If I was to say "I'm better at my job because white people are smarter than black people"..... That's a racist statement. There's no subjection. It's flat out racist even if someone feels it isn't. If 100 black people backed that claim up, it's still a racist claim because I implied one race was better than another. But if we have a depiction of 3 non white kids and 1 white showing "what not to do" at a pool, it shouldn't be left up to the person seeing it to decide if it's racist to them. Religion is subjective. Feelings are subjective. Opinions are subjective. One thing that should definitely NOT be subjective and that's when something is racist. It either is or it isn't. If it's subjective then it's insensitive or bad taste, but not racist. Yes I'm a white dude. I don't want my words to come across as "preaching" or "berating". I could be totally wrong about everything I said. I'm just saying it in what I deem as a common sense reply. I try to look at everything equally from all sides and use logic but that doesn't mean I'm right. So I don't want my words taken in a negative light as I'm just merely discussing.

Sheryl Meyer
Sheryl Meyer

Boycot that comercial and tell them it's racist!!!

Meka Toya Mack
Meka Toya Mack

They are not non white. They are all Black. It is a systematic issue in this country. It is not at all subjective. It is or isn't. White people have no place to say what isn't when racism doesn't affect your life. We live in a white centric society from top to bottom. There are plenty of happy shiny images of white people to behold on a daily basis. You know that which is why it doesn't matter in your bubble world. We arent afforded that privilege. Every image is important. We have enough to deal with when the media will quickly post a mug shot and write it off as "black on black crime" (although other races commit crimes against their own race and its just another news story...) and a white person gets a smiling photo posted with a slap on the wrist. So yes although small compared to our other issues surrounding alarming injustices, every negative image posted for mass consumption must be swiftly addressed.

You're the poor one April. You know nothing about Carol, yet you say she wants to use racial slurs in public. What lead you to that conclusion? Is it because she doesn't agree with your opinion of the poster? Is it because she was born white?

April Box-Moore
April Box-Moore

Hi John, nope nothing against folks born white it's just arrogant of any person to tell another person what should or should not bother them.

Sheryl Meyer
Sheryl Meyer

Well April can you explain how I can say my dog is black and white without an African American being offended because I used the word black and it's not socialbale acceptable to call something black.

Meka Toya Mack
Meka Toya Mack

Sheryl Meyer you sound really stupid right now. Black is a color and a race of people. Just like the word white. Who says you are banned from the word black ? ?? Now you are just making things up. Oh, and while we are here... An African American is someone who was born in Africa and is now an American. Direct or 1st/2nd/3rd generation. I am of African decent and whoever else happened to us down the line. I am a Black American. Some of us use African American to feel closer to the motherland and or make our lineage feel more official since we dont know what part of the continent we've come from without a DNA swab. #thanksslavery #themoreyouknow
