Donald Trump’s post-election message on “60 Minutes” is “Don’t be afraid”

In his first interview since being elected president, Donald Trump struck a more subdued chord than his campaign-trail persona.

He’ll still build the wall .. but some portions might be fencing.

Lock her up? He’ll think about it, he said in reference to a question about his opponent, Hillary Clinton.

Trump stressed during an interview with Leslie Stahl on CBS’ “60 Minutes” how nice and gracious both Bill and Hillary Clinton have been in congratulatory phone calls. Ditto George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, despite the battering Jeb Bush came in for during the primary.

“Jeb’s a nice guy,” Trump said.

His meeting with President Barack Obama, he added, was pleasant and productive, although they discussed “tough” issues.

And he’ll accept only a $1 per year salary, he said. He didn’t even know what the official going rate for POTUS is (in the $400K range, Stahl clarified).

As for policy: Trump said he’ll make pro-life, pro-Second Amendment nominations to the Supreme Court, but noted gay marriage is now established law of the land and he’s fine with it.

He implored a halt to all post-election threats, harassment and violence, turning to the camera to say: “Stop it.”

An observation people from all political persuasions would probably agree with: Trump said social media was more impactful than paid advertising, and propelled him to victory.

He said he’ll be more restrained on social media now. The interview was filmed on Friday; by Sunday he was tweeting his disdain for a New York Times article, leading Bravo’s Andy Cohen to admonish him to cool it on Twitter and focus on running the country.

His wife, Melania Trump, said she’ll champion initiatives to end cyberbullying as First Lady, while First Daughter Ivanka Trump said she will herald wage equality and childcare access.

In an apparent attempt to placating a divided country, the next commander of the free world said: “Don’t be afraid.”
