President Donald Trump announced a ban on transgender military personnel this week (via Twitter, of course).
“Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail,” he wrote, citing no specifics regarding costs or evidence that transgender military personnel cannot effectively serve their country.
The Pentagon was caught flat-footed by the announcement; presidential spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed when she said “the Secretary of Defense was immediately informed” after POTUS decided on the action. Absent writing instructions from the White House, the Department of Defense says it’s taking no actions to enforce the ban.
