Netflix severs ties with Kevin Spacey; what’s next for “House of Cards?”

Netflix is through with Kevin Spacey, but it’s not clear what happens to “House of Cards.”

Days after a BuzzFeed News report detailed actor Anthony Rapp’s allegations about Spacey’s aggressive, unwanted advances upon him when he was only 14, eight people associated with the Netflix political drama told CNN the star had demonstrated “toxic” and “predatory” behavior.

Now Netflix says in a statement to Deadline it “will not be involved with any further production of ‘House of Cards’ that includes Kevin Spacey” and has canned plans for a separate movie project. The series’ producing company said in a statement that Spacey is “suspended” and they’re trying to figure out a path forward. Variety reports that producers are considering a narrative where Frank Underwood dies (is there any other tenable possibility?)

Spacey, who would have been 26 at the time of the incident Rapp detailed, did not deny the allegations that Rapp, a star of the “Star Trek: Discovery” series and Broadway and film versions of “Rent,” detailed in the interview with BuzzFeed News. Instead Spacey’s statement, posted via his official Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts said he was sorry for “what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior” if Rapp’s version of events are indeed accurate.

The “House of Cards” accusers  told CNN anonymously that Spacey’s behavior has included “nonconsensual touching and crude comments and targeted production staffers who were typically young and male.” One of the accusers alleged Spacey assaulted him and told CNN, “I have no doubt that this type of predatory behavior was routine for him and that my experience was one of many and that Kevin had few if any qualms about exploiting his status and position.”

Spacey has said he’s seeking treatment.
