The Razzies really love to razz Tyler Perry.
Once again the Golden Raspberry Awards, an online outfit you could safely think of as the anti-Oscars, has put the Atlanta entertainment mogul up for worst actress. This time the nomination is for his title role in locally filmed “Boo! A Madea Halloween 2.”
He was up for the same recognition for “Boo! A Madea Halloween.” That movie, the first of his works to film at the former Fort McPherson site that’s home to Tyler Perry Studios, also earned him a worst-combo nomination for “Tyler Perry & That Same Old Worn Out Wig” and a worst director Razzie nomination as well.
He didn’t “win” any of the categories, though. The 2017 Razzies were conferred upon Dinesh D’Souza and Bruce Schooley for worst director for “Hillary’s America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party.” Rebekah Turner was named worst actress for her title role in that movie. Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill were deemed worst duo for “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.”
The Razzies really seem to want Perry to “win” a Golden Raspberry this year, though. He’s also up for worst remake, rip-off or sequel and, once again, worst combo. The parameters have been widened in the latter category to include “Tyler Perry & Either The Ratty Old Dress or Worn Out Wig.”
Other Georgia connections in this year’s Razzie crop include Zac Efron, who’s up for his role as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s lifeguard sidekick in “Baywatch.” The movie itself, which was filmed partly on Tybee Island, is up for worst picture, worst remake, rip-off or sequel (it was based on the old television serious) and worst screenplay.
“Baywatch” deserves every Razzie it’s up for and then some. I watched it on a flight; surely airing this needlessly gross garbage at 30,000 feet has to be some sort of FAA violation.
I wouldn’t say Zac did a bad job acting, though. He just does a bad job picking projects. Is there a Razzie for that? Georgia-filmed “Dirty Grandpa” and “Neighbors 2” were equally awful.
Susan Sarandon gets a worst supporting actress nod for locally filmed “Bad Moms Christmas.” I didn’t see that one but it did look terrible.
Here’s the full list of Razzie nods. “Good luck” to all the nominees!
